Find out why:
Rugby Gives And Rugby Makes You ThinkThere are some things in life that just hit a chord. Some things make you look at your own life and think hey shit I haven't really got the problems I think I have. Doddie Weir is one of those things.
I have a crystal clear image and memories of Doddie Weir. The man mountain rampaging through the middle of the park with that distinctive headband. There were certain players from my youth like that who conjure up ccertain images. Dean Richards the scruffbag with shirt untucked socks around his ankles with those gorilla arms. Jonathan Davies for Wales with that silky skill and that nose of course. Boy I hated him as an Englishman (Of course out of envy for how good he was against us). Then there was Doddie a menace at the line out and a great ball carrier, usually saving his best for against England. His name sounded so great when the great Bill Maclaren was commentating too.
Doddie Weir Diagnosed With MNDSo it was a huge shock to hear of Doddies plight last year. I had already been shocked by Michael Lynagh's stroke. Then came the news that the big man Doddie had been diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease (MND). He earned 62 caps for Scotland as well of course being selected for and touring with the British and Irish Lions in 1997 for South Africa. Amazingly was that he only played for 2 major clubs showing a loyalty rarely found, first to Melrose and then Newcastle Falcons.
What is amazing now his ability to turn that competitive rugby union vibe to launching and driving forward his foundation and registered charity My Name'5 Doddie Foundation. The disease itself is incurable but he is driven to help fellow
sufferers and get more research carried out.
As he says
"It is frustrating that there has been so little progress over the last two decades. I want to push the need for research into MND further up the agenda. We may be too late in finding something that can help me but I committed to doing everything I can committed to doing everything I can to help find a cure."The foundation run by Doddie and Jill is looking to basic and practical relief. This might be with providing mobility and transport an mobility needs as well as care and respite. Along with access and basic living requirements.
